About the “Enhancing Value through IT Leverage” Program

The “Enhancing Value through IT Leverage” Program is a joint initiative between Coeus Age and CyberMedia Research, launched with the objective of creating a knowledge platform for IT users, IT vendors, service providers and system integration (SI) partners to benefit from.

Indian enterprises' usage of information technology (IT) has become widespread in the two decades since the economic liberization of 1991. Enterprise managements have extensively debated the issue of ‘what’ value does IT provide. But the debate on ‘how’ to build business value from IT has not received adequate attention. Coeus Age, based on years of research on the subject, has developed a framework, known as “Enhancing Value through IT Leverage” Framework, which seeks to provide answers to the ‘how’ question.

We believe that ‘how’ to build business value from IT is inherently a change and development process, which has a three-pronged focus – the attitude or ‘mental makeup’ of senior management, the organization structure and its ‘formal’ and ‘informal’ relationships, and the business practices followed.

CyberMedia Research has joined hands with Coeus Age to develop the BVIT Program in order to articulate the benefits of adoption for users, providers and builders of IT. The aim is to spread the debate on how to build business value, and help enterprises become more efficient and competitive in the emerging, rapidly globalizing economy.

About the Coeus Age ‘BVIT Matrix’

Research has identified that the value of IT value is embedded in an organization’s formal arrangements and cultural / psychological make-up. IT interacts with both of these forces and it is the interaction that determines what IT can achieve and what it cannot. This intricate relationship between the formal business arrangements, cultural realities and IT, help to identify the three levers of creating business value – Business-IT Alignment, Strategic Vision for IT and IT Infrastructure Maturity. This is depicted in figures ‘a’, ‘b’ and ‘c’ below. If any meaningful change and development has to happen, it needs a proper handle on these three levers.

The BVIT Matrix is developed by plotting three levers (Business-IT Alignment, Strategic Vision for IT and IT Infrastructure Maturity) on three orthogonal axes. Assuming two values for each, ‘high’ and ‘low’, eight quadrants are obtained (as shown in Figure ‘d’) below). An organization can measure itself on the three levers of business value of IT by using an instrument developed by Coeus Age; based on their scores (‘high’ or ‘low’) on the three levers, an organization can be mapped on the BVIT Matrix in one of the eight quadrants. Each quadrant signifies a unique change & development need for an organization to be able to create higher business value from IT.

The eight quadrants of the BVIT Matrix are defined based on different values of Business-IT Alignment, Strategic Vision for IT and IT Infrastructure Maturity, as shown in Table 1, below.
