Challenges faced by CIOs of Mid-size Enterprises

Mid-size and emerging enterprises face various challenges with regard to their IT strategy formulation, prioritization, implementation and management. Some of their key concerns are centered on issues such as:

  • IT is disparate: Could be functioning in pockets and often not talking to each other

  • Not sure where the infrastructure investments should be directed

  • Change management and usage are important and crucial aspects

  • Lack of awareness of the right solution

  • IT awareness and understanding are often restricted to the top layers of the organization

  • Implemented legacy systems for which code is missing today (due to people movement etc.)

  • Inability to migrate to new platforms

  • Need based IT deployment rather than being strategically aligned to business goals

  • Lack of reliable consulting organizations

These challenges can be overcome by employing suitable Financial, Strategic and Technical consulting to assess the current business situation.

Key Needs of Mid-Size Business Enterprises from Technology Deployment

Financial: A consultant who can assess the existing IT assets, look at the growth plan, and recommend a suitable financial model to achieve the same. The model would empower IT decision making to be viable and a key for future business growth. This may involve financial modelling around Capex vs. Opex decisions and so on.

Strategic: A consultant who can understand the present day business processes and help develop a strategic growth path using technology (not necessarily restricted to Information Technology alone) as a key growth-enabling tool. The strategy should be a well-balanced mix of long term and short term objectives and business targets.

Technical: A consultant who can assess the current deployment of technology and help create a technology roadmap, which would allow the enterprise to keep up with market needs, the competition (global and local) and recommend a more adaptive infrastructure.
